Announcing Call for Submissions for CLOG : FEES

Like other industries experiencing deprofessionalization in the wake of the 2008 financial crisis, architecture is undergoing a realignment on multiple fronts. The increasing use of artificial intelligence to enhance productivity, a mounting array of design and technical consultants sequestering value without assuming professional liability, and the growing leverage of general contractors are all collapsing the role of the architect.

At the core of this dilemma is the architect’s fee. In the United States, professional services fees are seldom discussed openly among architects, due in part to antitrust litigation brought against the American Institute of Architects by the U.S. Department of Justice in 1972 and 1990. In these cases, the AIA was found in violation of the Sherman Act, and subsequently barred from establishing guidelines for—and even discussing—fees. Against this backdrop of legal woes, architecture is also marked by a professional and academic culture that has long viewed an emphasis on money as unbecoming. The result has been generations of architects reluctant and/or ill-equipped to negotiate their worth. At stake is the decline of the architect’s value, and with it, a profession uniquely situated to balance civic, commercial, and aesthetic interests.

CLOG : FEES addresses this critical topic at a moment of uncertainty, asking: What is the value of the architect? How has the changing role of the profession affected fees? What must architects do to get a bigger piece of the pie?

Submissions are due December 6, 2024.
